摘要: The systematic characterization of the painting’s palette and technique applied on execution mural paintings Batalha Monastery (Batalha, Leiria, Portugal) is presented. These are oldest known in Portugal (apart from Roman frescoes) represent beginning an artistic Portuguese tradition that continues until nineteenth century. aim study was to identify for first time by adopting a multi-analytical physico-chemical approach pigments, binder, alteration products (white veils, crusts, pigment alteration) these unique works arts order not only better understand painting technique, but also support conservation-restoration intervention took place April August 2010. Micro-sampling paint layers performed representative areas paintings. pigments binders carried out microscopy microanalysis cross sections using optical microscopy, scanning electron coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS), micro-FTIR, micro diffraction. combined analysis allowed identification palette: Vermillion (HgS) red ochre reds, yellow ochres yellows, green earths malachite greens, azurite blues, carbon blacks. use dependent motive painted while most expensive materials were used important iconographic motives. Alteration identified darkened White veil surface as calcite precipitation/dissolution processes due water run-off sacristy dome ceiling walls.
