摘要: Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a major clinical and public health problem in Kuwait. The objective of the study was to determine prevalence rates NIDDM among representative sample Kuwaiti adult population aged 20 older two out five governorates identify associated risk factors for disease. A total 3003 subjects (1105 men 1898 women) were interviewed examined by research team during period September 1995 June 1996. specially designed questionnaire completed physical examination included height, weight blood pressure measurements. Fasting samples withdrawn, centrifuged immediately refrigerated. Interpretation oral glucose tolerance tests based on World Health Organisation diagnostic criteria (1985). denominator used computing obtained from Kuwait census. overall this found be 14.8% (14.7% men, women). Diabetic presented at relatively young age, rate age group 20–39 5.7% (95% confidence interval, 4.4–7.0) 40–59 18.3% 16.1–20.6). Obesity significant factor, P<0.001. strong association family history (adjusted odds ratio=1.80, P<0.001) suggests genetic component. Hypertension markedly with IGT (P<0.001). With demographic transition which already started if remains same, aging will contribute even more upward trends abnormal its serious impact morbidity mortality population. between hypertension may suggest common approach prevention control these conditions.
