摘要: There is growing interest in building ATM switch based "multimedia LANs" as the next generation local area networks, which overcomes performance limitations of shared media type LANs, such Ethernet and FDDI. Since LAN terminals tend to transmit packets at same speed that network links, 100 Mbps, switches are inevitable provide much larger buffer capacity than public switches, designed accommodate lower-speed data services link speed. Moreover, both low delay switching multicast functions required for multimedia applications. Responding these requirements, this paper proposes a new architecture, referred "expandable ATOM (XATOM)", kind input output can expand simply by adding cost memory chips. By combining low-speed large input-buffer memories backpressure control between buffers, XATOM achieve high-throughput with cell loss rate even high-speed burst traffic environments. contention among multiple buffers eliminated switch, management, avoiding head-of-line blocking supporting priority functions, be easily implemented. Delay probability have been evaluated on simulation study results. The also discusses some implementation specific details. >
