There is substantial female worker (FSW) mobility between the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka but little programming emphasis on migrant FSWs in India. We sought understand individual/cultural structural contextual determinants migration among from Karnataka. METHODS: A cross-sectional face-to-face interview 1567 142 villages 3 districts northern India was conducted January June 2008. Villages having 10+ a large number whom were selected following mapping FSWs. Multinomial logistic regression identify characteristics associated with (travelled for >/= 2 weeks outside district past year) mobile languages (AOR: 5.6; 2.6-12.0) have more clients (AOR per client: 2.9; 1.2-7.2) acts day act: 3.5; 1.3-9.3). Mobile had higher income work 13.2; 3.9-44.6) relative nonmigrants not as strongly CONCLUSION: Out-migration tied characteristics; thus structure inherent should capitalized when developing HIV preventive interventions. The important role epidemics coupled potential rapid spread requires most effective interventions possible
