摘要: There are over 90 different capsular serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus). As well as being a tool for understanding pneumococcal epidemiology, serotyping can provide useful information vaccine efficacy and impact studies. The Quellung reaction is the gold standard method serotyping. involves testing cell suspension with pooled specific antisera directed against polysaccharide. antigen-antibody reactions observed microscopically. protocol has three main steps: 1) preparation bacterial suspension, 2) mixing cells on glass slide, 3) reading using microscope. reasonably simple to perform be applied wherever suitable microscope available.
