Sore mouth in hospice in-patients: incidence and results of microbiological assessment

摘要: AbstractSore mouth is a common symptom in cancer patients which impacts negatively on their quality of life. This audit was performed consecutive admissions to an in-patient palliative care unit Perth, Western Australia assess the incidence soreness and associated microbiological culture polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results. Of patients, 24% (20/83) recorded sore mouth. The most organism isolated Candida spp. (n = 8), followed by herpes simplex virus type I (HSV; n 5), Staphylococcus aureus 2) Klebsiella pneumoniae 1). Only one five with HSV had classic 'cold sore' lesion crusting ulceration lip. others non-specific findings such as erythema 3), coated tongue or dry 3). results highlight greater than previously reported suggest further work be aetiology treatment hospice patients.
