摘要: Background: Chronic recurrent sinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common chronic conditions in United States. There a significant subpopulation CRS patients who remain resistant to cure despite rigorous treatment regimens including surgery, allergy therapy, and prolonged antibiotic therapy. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) noninvasive nonantibiotic broad spectrum antimicrobial treatment. Our previous vitro studies demonstrated that aPDT reduced polymicrobial biofilm planktonic bacteria fungi by > 99.9% after single Prior human however, must be not result histologic damage sinus ciliated respiratory epithelium. The objective this study was demonstrate safety on living mucosal model (EpiAirway™). Methods: A EpiAirway performed. Treatment groups included nontreatment control, laser light alone, photosensitizer therapeutic combination (aPDT). At completion treatment, tissue fixed 10% formalin, paraffin-embedded, sectioned, H&E stained mounted. All samples were blinded microscopically examined pathologist assess any effect tissue, cilia, or glands. results correlated with parameters. Results: The no alteration cilia epithelium groups. Conclusions: aPDT safe for resulting mucosa as found sinuses. Laryngoscope, 2012
