摘要: Organic carbon fluxes to the deep ocean may be enhanced by association with ballast mineral material such as calcite and opal. We made simultaneous measurements of upper production (calcification), opal (silicification) organic (photosynthesis) at 14 stations between 42°S 49°N in Atlantic Ocean. These confirm light-dependency calcification photosynthesis, substrate dependency silicification. estimate that mineralizing phytoplankton represent ~5–20% fixation, similar contributions from both coccolithophores diatoms. Estimates average turnover times for are ~3 days, indicative their relatively labile nature. By comparison, particulate ~10 days. Rapid suggests an important role plankton community removing ocean. Comparison our surface rates sediment trap data confirms ~70% is dissolved 2–3 km, only a small proportion total (<2%) reaches
