The relationships between female reproductive parameters (fertility, pregnancy, and lactation status) body mass, condition, length in South African fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) were investigated over 4 years. Ovulation rate every year was 100% despite interannual differences condition index (BCI). overall pregnancy 79%. proportion of pregnant females related to BCI but not mass or length. In good years, decreased through the first part cycle a minimum at implantation increased again pregnancy. 1989, declined whole cycle, there higher nonpregnant failures lactation. Thus, poor nutritional conditions may affect success failure rear pup, pup production following also be reduced. This lower is partly explained by an increase incidence spontaneous abortions, other such as are likely involved.
