An ethnographic study of tobacco control in hospital settings

摘要: Background: Tobacco control in hospital settings is characterised by a focus on protection strategies and an increasing expectation that health practitioners provide cessation support to patients. While claim have positive attitudes toward supporting patient efforts, missed opportunities are the practice norm. Objective: To study workplace culture relevant tobacco use as part of mixed-methods research project investigated hospital-based registered nurses’ integration interventions. Design: The was conducted at two hospitals situated British Columbia, Canada. Data collection included 135 hours field work including observations ward activities designated smoking areas, 85 unstructured conversations with nurses, patient-care documents 16 adult in-patient wards. Results: findings demonstrate (for example, restrictions) were relatively well integrated into organisational but same not true for strategies. An analysis resources documentation revealed absence addressing cessation. Nurses framed patients’ relational issue, risk safety, burden. Furthermore, nurses tended possess only vague awareness nicotine dependence. Conclusion: Overcoming challenges extending within could be enhanced emphasising value use, raising dependence, improving availability address addiction issues.
