Was elusive carnivore a panther? DNA typing of faeces reveals the mystery

摘要: In this study, we report the findings of a recent case in which officials an Indian zoo claimed that animal, possibly carnivore, is periodically visiting from nearby vast forest area and causing panic villages. They collected some elusive faecal material vicinity herbivore enclosure. Looking to pugmarks found matter ceased, could not decide whether it was lioness, tiger or panther. We resolved mystery by DNA-based analysis material, using our recently developed novel universal primers amplify sequence specific fragment mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. The analyses were confirmed after few days when trapped animal same species as suggested report. potential procedure investigate cases related wildlife offence discussed.
