Gender specific land-use decisions and implications for ecosystem services in semi-matrilineal Sumatra

摘要: Abstract Gender specificity with respect to land-use options and responsiveness agents that offer related investment opportunities is poorly understood. We combined agent-based modeling experimental role playing games compare preferences decisions between men women in a landscape dominated by rubber agroforests Sumatra, Indonesia. Ecosystem service delivery can be influenced gender specific preferences, especially areas under conservation agreements. The research methods were designed examine aspects of three ‘bounds’ human nature ( bounded rationality, willpower self-interests ) relation decisions. Rice fields (mostly owned inherited females) provide part local staple food needs the study area, whereas income addition resources for use oil palm monocultures are fully market oriented. In both model game exercises, preferred status quo rice production combination agroforest land uses, but conversion more financially profitable monoculture systems, increased carbon emissions as side effect. Although genders exhibited similar ecosystem provision, regulatory services (i.e., climate water regulation) reduced women’s landuse choices. Thus, tradeoffs potentially greater women-dominated landscapes these circumstances. Furthermore, gender-specific limitations socio-cultural contexts matrilineal societies) may influence flow well patterns.
