What makes an event a mega-event? Definitions and sizes

摘要: There is considerable ambiguity about what makes an event a mega-event. Intervening in this debate, paper develops definition and classification scheme for mega-events. On the basis of review existing definitions, it proposes four constitutive dimensions mega-events: visitor attractiveness, mediated reach, costs transformative impact. The indicators each dimension maps onto these sample latest editions nine large events (Expo, Summer Winter Olympics, Football World Cup, European Championship, Asian Games, Commonwealth Pan American Universiade). From this, multi-dimensional, point-based according to size, distinguishing between major events, mega-events recently emerging class giga-events. Concluding, identifies need more systematic data on impacts broad range large-scale over time.
