摘要: Abstract Background Multiple sclerosis has been associated with progressive brain volume loss. Objective We aimed to systematically summarize reported rates of loss in multiple and explore associations between markers disease severity. Methods A systematic literature search (2003–2013) was conducted identify studies ≥ 12 months follow-up, measurement algorithms, changes volume. Meta-analysis random-effects models were applied. Associations change, lesion duration examined pre-specified meta-regression models. Results identified 38 studies. For the meta-analysis, 12 that annualized percentage change (PBVC), specified first-generation disease-modifying treatments (e.g., interferon-beta or glatiramer acetate) used Structural Image Evaluation Normalized Atrophy algorithm analyzed. The PBVC ranged from − 1.34% − 0.46% per year. pooled − 0.69% (95% CI = − 0.87% − 0.50%) study arms receiving (N = 6 studies) − 0.71% CI = − 0.81% − 0.61%) untreated studies). Conclusions In this study, average patient treatment no lost approximately 0.7% volume/year, well above normal aging (0.1%–0.3% volume/year).
