Adoption and impacts of modern sorghum and pearl millet varieties in Northern Nigeria

摘要: This paper uses a data set of 1105 households from 119 villages living in 6 states Northern Nigeria (Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano and Yobe) to assess the current potential adoption rates as well impact of modern sorghum pearl millet varieties released since 1996 Nigeria. Varieties under investigation include modern hybrids namely ICSV 111, 400, ICSH 89002 NG, ISCH 89009 SK 5912 SOSAT C88, LCIC 9702, GB 8735 ZATIB. Adopters are defined as those having planted at least one modern variety or sorghum. Results showed that current adoption for is estimated 34.8% farmers sorghum varieties about 22.9%. In terms area planted, account 25% the pearl 17 % planted. The C88 largely adopted by farmers accounting 95% with varieties. For sorghum, 400 and ICSV 111 most widely 8.46% 7.07% cultivated respectively. They both more than Over all, extrapolating from FAO statistical data, it can be Nigeria, occupy 1,154,261 ha 1,200,532 ha.
