摘要: Bilateral pontine tegmental lesions in cats release a state of paradoxical sleep (PS) without atonia that possess all other electrographic criteria PS. PS has been previously considered as unitary phenomenon, but the present work demonstrates different behavioral syndromes result from lesion placements. Five 25 exhibited minimal syndrome increased proximal limb and head movements. The was not raised; coordinated behavior seen. nuchal electromyogram (EMG) showed tone for 25-100% such an episode. Selective destruction origin (n = 2) or caudally projecting fibers 1), tegmentoreticular pathway released this unorganized This had proposed to mediate atonia, additional damage is necessary completely well elaborate behaviors discussed below. Eight raised their heads, righted forequarters, moved head, neck forelimbs movements resembling orienting, staring, reaching attempting stand. releasing were centered at P 3.0, H 2.0, V -4.0, damaged region superior colliculus. Two with slightly more ventral did exhibit orienting behavior. Six demonstrated violent phasic attack punctuating tonic periods quiet staring searching Attack resulted extending rostroventrally into midbrain 2.5, -4.5 (4/6) unilateral lateral arising central amygdalar nucleus (2/6). In 4 cats, fore- hindlimb activation locomotion during Walking larger, -5.5. Considering anatomy relationship brain stem systems known play role locomotion, we conclude inhibitory by these simply which neural activity normal can be expressed behaviorally.
