摘要: Teigen and Brun have suggested that distinct from their numerical implications, most probability phrases are either positive or negative, in they encourage one to think of reasons why the target event will not occur. We report two experiments testing our hypotheses (a) direction a phrase can be predicted properties its membership function, (b) this relation is invariant across contexts, (c) —originally formulated by (1999)—that strong modifiers intensify directionality. For each phrase, participants encoded functions judging degree which it described probabilities 0.0, 0.1, …, 1.0, also completed sentences including phrase. The types given sentence completion task were used determine phrase's results support regarding between directionality functions, but we found only limited for hypothesis effects on A secondary goal, validate an efficient method encoding was achieved.
