摘要: This chapter explores three essential concepts in Global Mental Health research and practice: language communication, cross-cultural measurement of mental illness, the role structural violence creating perpetuating health disparities. Examples are drawn from multiple field projects conducted Haiti Dominican Republic 2010 to 2013. The focus on communication chiefly concerns idioms distress their potential improve understandings illness. We discuss both universalist particularist approaches including adaptation standard screening instruments, as well ‘on-the-ground’ development new instruments a given context. close our discussion by framing studies within broader rubric theory, which can be helpful not only ascertaining root causes disparities but also guiding policy advocacy efforts elimination.
