摘要: Extreme atmosphere-induced seiche oscillations occasionally occur in specific inlets and bays of the world ocean causing severe damage to coastal areas, ships port constructions. Ciu- tadella inlet (Menorca Island, Western Mediterranean) can be singled out as a place where such large seiches, locally known rissaga, are quite common. Similar (although weaker) also regularly observed Shikotan Island (South Kuril Islands, northwestern Pacific). Several spectacular events these regions, identified first part this study (Rabinovich Monserrat, 1996), analysed determine atmospheric parameters responsible for generation large- amplitude seiches. Their mechanism was shown different from that ordinary background oscillations. Coincidence some external factors certain resonance effects seem necessary produce destructive waves. In particular, rissaga waves Ciutadella were found related significant disturbances propagating southwest, coinciding with orientation inlet, having phase speed about 30 m/s, which is close long offshore Menorca. Pronounced resonant properties inner basin strongly amplify incoming inlet. contrast, coast protected normally incident by elongated Kunashir hence whole situation there not so favorable excitation
