摘要: There is a growing recognition of the need to conserve biodiversity that has been conceptualised in Convention Biological Diversity. Maintenance fish species richness particularly important, because habitat degradation inland waters continues accelerate on global scale. Here we develop empirical models for predicting natural lakes various geographical regions world. In tropical where richer than temperate lakes, can be predicted by few variables such as lake area and altitude. Low most might due effect glaciation colonisation speciation fishes. US, Canadian northern European acidification one important factors influencing richness. Although limnological characteristics influence altitude have greater predictive power. This contrast rivers, which reliably basin area. power curves, describe relationship between size exponent always regions. Because tropics threats through are those waters.
