摘要: Cellular network-based machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is fast becoming a market-changing force for wide spectrum of businesses and applications such as telematics, smart metering, point-of-sale terminals, home security automation systems. In this paper, we aim to answer the following important question: Does traffic generated by M2M devices impose new requirements challenges cellular network design management? To question, take first look at characteristics compare it traditional smartphone traffic. We have conducted our measurement analysis using week-long trace collected from tier-1 in US. characterize range perspectives, including temporal dynamics, device mobility, application usage, performance. Our experimental results show that exhibits significantly different patterns than multiple aspects. For instance, much larger ratio uplink-to-downlink volume, their typically diurnal patterns, they are more likely generate synchronized resulting bursty aggregate volumes, less mobile compared smartphones. On other hand, also find generally competing with smartphones resources co-located geographical regions. These findings suggest better protocol design, careful allocation, modified pricing schemes may be needed accommodate rise devices.
