One hundred papers included final assessment. Studies primarily related relation surgical procedures, no clear distinction was made concerning onset acute chronic pain. Ten broad types instrument were identified, generally quality support use various instruments poor. Only one specific (UNESP-Botucatu scale) had published validity, reliability sensitivity at the level randomised control trial, but with positive rather than placebo control, limited its the ovariohysterectomy situation. appeared focus aspect of pain, study clearly discriminating between components pain. Conclusions relevance Further studies are required provide higher for methods used to cats. Furthermore, consistent definition is needed. Tools need to be validated can conditions different evaluators (veterinary surgeons and owners), which consider both emotional aspects
