摘要: Rock, soil, and ice penetration by coring, drilling or abrading is of great importance to a large number space earth applications. Proven techniques sample Mars subsurface will be critical for future NASA astrobiology missions that search records past present life on the planet. An Ultrasonic/Sonic Drill/Corer (USDC) has been developed as an adaptable tool many these applications [Bar-Cohen et al., 2001]. The USDC uses novel drive mechanism transform ultrasonic sonic vibrations tip horn into hammering drill bit through intermediate free-flying mass. design was modified fabricate Ice Gopher designed core down meters depth in situ analysis collection. This technology demonstrated at Lake Vida Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Coring -20°C challenge efforts were made develop required cutting, chip handling potential melting (and refreezing) during drilling. fabrication challenges testing results are presented this paper.
