摘要: A dominant characteristic of sea ice in the polar regions is its almost constant drift and deformation. Because this deformation, a typical 100 km2 patch will contain variety thicknesses, ranging from open water to very thick ice, ridges extending possibly 30 m or more below surface. On top variably matrix there often relatively thin (typically about cm) snow cover. Although thin, cover can cause substantial insulation reduce growth rate.
