Endonasal transsphenoidal approach for pituitary adenomas and other sellar lesions: an assessment of efficacy, safety, and patient impressions.

The direct endonasal approach performed with the aid of an operating microscope for removal pituitary tumors has potential advantage over traditional sublabial route minimizing postoperative rhinological complications, yet maintaining a high degree efficacy and safety. To assess effectiveness this procedure, tumor remission rates surgical complications were documented, patients' complaints recorded using questionnaire. Methods. One hundred consecutive patients underwent 109 operations removal. At median follow-up period 16 months (range 3–45 months), as follows: in 40 endocrine-inactive macroadenomas, 95% noninvasive 40% invasive tumors; 20 prolactinomas, 75% prolactinomas initial prolactin (PRL) level lower than 200 ng/ml, 33% those PRL between 600 0% higher 1400 ng...
