摘要: To determine whether antimicrobial synergism affects the outcome of gram-negative bacteremia among profoundly (less than 100/microliter) neutropenic cancer patients, clinical courses 75 such patients who received empiric therapy with combination, broad-spectrum antibiotics were analyzed. Twenty-nine 34 (85 percent) whose granulocyte count increased to more 100/microliter during improved, whereas only 12 41 (29 no increase in showed improvement (p = 0.0002). The critical group for further analysis was, therefore, those persistent, profound granulocytopenia. Among these was associated a substantially better response rate: eight 18 (44 improved compared none 13 whom not detected 0.005); presence or absence could be assessed pathogens isolated from remaining 10 because organisms exquisitely susceptible one two used. Further evaluation persistently indicated that appeared even when pathogen both antibiotics. Thus, seven 11 (64 drugs synergistic activity, six present 0.01). These data again demonstrate importance recovery patient and indicate combinations are
