摘要: An important unanswered question about clinical use of pancreas transplantation is: can transplants reverse or, at least, stabilize well-established lesions insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)? To answer this question, we performed whole transplantations in 190 highly inbred rats 6, 9,12,15,18, and 21 mo after induction (DM) with alloxan. We then studied the effect on renal mesangial enlargement (ME) for 24 onset DM by a quantitative morphologic technique which camera lucida tracings mesangium were made × 1250 analyzed using an electronic planimeter connected to calculator/computer. A pretransplant kidney biopsy was obtained so that served as their own controls. In addition, studies 28 57 untreated diabetic controls 55 nondiabetic Monthly metabolic showed maintained very tight, lifelong control diabetes. Kidney sections 2 yr from before significant increases total area, nuclear-free percentage glomerular area occupied area. Pancreas consistently produced reversal ME, regardless when it performed. most instances, reduced size smaller than measured 6 mo. one hallmark glomerulosclerosis, selected target lesion test effectiveness because disease is cause mortality morbidity IDDM, there striking similarity between those humans. Our results demonstrate are capable reversing main nephropathy.
