摘要: Diamond-anvil-cell and shock-wave technologies now permit the study of matter under multimegabar pressure (that is, several hundred GPa). The properties in this regime differ drastically from those known at 1 atm (about 105 Pa). Just how different chemistry is high what role chemical intuition for bonding structure can have understanding will be explored account. We discuss detail an overlapping hierarchy responses to increased density: a) squeezing out van der Waals space (for molecular crystals); b) increasing coordination; c) decreasing length covalent bonds size anions; d) in extreme regime, moving electrons off atoms generating new modes correlation. Examples startling physics that emerge such conditions alternate account with qualitative ideas about involved.
