摘要: This paper presents data from the first period of fieldwork for Small Islands in Peril (SMIP) Project, which is located Milne Bay, at eastern end island New Guinea. The central aim SMIP Project to generate policies sustainable coastal and marine resource management via an analysis responses people on small, overpopulated islands pressure subsistence resources. On such swidden agriculture system tends be under stress as indicated by shortening fallow periods, increased use crops that are tolerant low nutrient levels cassava sweet potato, some cases expansion grasslands. People these appear increasingly reliant commercial fishing, primarily beche-de-mer shark-fin, both exported China. Income fisheries enables them supplement economy with imported food. However, despite vast area resources available people, there now clear evidence overfishing higher priced species beche-de-mer. Shark also prone rapid unlikely last long current fishing pressure.
