Internet Adoption and the Survival of Print Newspapers: A Country-Level Examination

摘要: In this paper we examine the effect of Internet adoption on daily print newspaper circulation and survival rates. We use country-level yearly panel data from more than ninety countries for 2000 through 2009 containing information penetration, local national circulation, number titles. Our results show that increases in penetration can explain a large fraction decline titles observed recent years. appears to affect newspapers greater extent newspapers, which might be due newspapers’ reliance classified advertising. further suggest decreases rates by driving out business without significantly affecting net surviving newspapers. Because readership has been linked health democratic system, importance examining industry extends beyond literature media industry.
