摘要: Abstract While our knowledge of the structural conditions giving rise to movements has grown, understanding their dynamics remains limited. Such is particularly case with respect new social postindustrial polities. Two heuristic models movement change are developed: vanguard mobilization and grassroots initiative. The have different predictions about (1) community opinion, (2) differences between old adherents, (3) variation among adherents. tested data from a quasi-panel survey western New York concerning nuclear waste facility. initiative model best characterizes dynamics. broader implications for growth, cooptation, success, demise discussed.
