Factors Associated with Low Early Uptake of a National Program to Prevent Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT): Results of a Survey of Mothers and Providers, Botswana, 2003

摘要: In Francistown, Botswana, approximately 40% of pregnant women are HIV positive. PMTCT has been available since 1999, antiretroviral (ARV) therapy 2001, and 95% have antenatal care (ANC) deliver in hospital. However, 2002, only 33% ANC clients were tested for HIV, not all with received services. 2003, we conducted a survey 504 postpartum to explore reasons poor program uptake, interviewed 82 health providers about PMTCT. Most (95%) believed that should be HIV. multivariate analysis, factors associated having an test included being at urban site, high knowledge score, knowing someone receiving or ARV therapy, partner who had Neither fear stigma nor resistance from partners frequent refusing test. Providers services reported discomfort their skills, 84% testing routine. Ensuring adequate PMTCT, creating systems whereby HIV-positive can educate support other women, making routine may improve the uptake testing.
