摘要: Theory suggests the likelihood of spatial heterogeneity in deconcentration and restructuring within regions. Measuring for six subregions a 65-county area surrounding Chicago, this research estimates varying magnitude extent deconcentration. The results allow three primary conclusions: does vary across region; while includes an outer ring counties (metropolitan nonmetropolitan) framing dominant city (Chicago), it excludes more distant which have access to both smaller cities, and; set budgetary constraints facing commuters acts consistently study region. Overall, indicate that strict use metropolitan nonmetropolitan classifications obscures our understanding mechanisms population growth at urban-rural fringe. variation cross-cuts dissects boundaries contains than can be easily represented by two or groups counties. chapter concludes with discussion policy implications experiencing those are neither isolated nor suburbanizing.
