摘要: Abstract Tree microhabitats (cavities, conks of fungi, bark features) play an important role for both rare and specialized species biodiversity; their preservation should therefore be targeted by biodiversity-friendly forest practices. However, when compared to other old-growth characteristics like deadwood or large trees, tree have only recently been studied so related scientific knowledge is still relatively limited. Defining target values microhabitat densities in managed forests mostly based on expert rather than quantitative empirical data. We the microhabitat-bearing trees between forests, where wood harvested, strictly protected reserves, harvesting has abandoned, 17 French (222 plots) located lowlands mountain regions. found that are generally higher strict reserves this difference mainly driven standing dead living trees. Though scarce, over-contribute observed while played a lesser but significant role. In addition, contrary results obtained (such as volumes), was lowland forests. For individual microhabitats, five out eleven mountains one (woodpecker cavities) were significantly more numerous Finally, total density specific such cavities features increased with time since last harvest. This increase also supported Compared previous studies comparable contexts, we estimated higher; however, comparisons could made most documented types. Our support idea management abandonment favours abundance diversity microhabitats. dynamics remain poorly known long-term monitoring will help understand underlying mechanisms recruitment. meantime, our may inspire managers application daily
