Genetic and morphometric differentiation between island and mainland southern elephant seal populations.

摘要: We compare genetic (both nuclear and mitochondrial) morphometric measures between two putative populations of southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), interpret the results in context data from mark-recapture satellite-telemetric studies. One population is on Argentine mainland, while other 2,400 km away South Georgia island. found pronounced differentiation at mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region that was distinct pattern variation seen among island rookeries. Some characters seven out ten nuclear-DNA markers also showed mainland sites. Diversity high both but mtDNA diversity low population, suggesting a founder event little subsequent immigration females. Morphological differences may suggest different selective environments
