摘要: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex neurodegenerative visual disorder that causes profound physical and psychosocial effects. Visual impairment in AMD caused by the loss of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells light-sensitive photoreceptor they support. There currently no effective treatment for most common form this disease (dry AMD). A new approach to treating involves transplantation RPE derived from either human embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells. Multiple clinical trials are being initiated using variety cell therapies. Although many animal models available research, do not recapitulate all aspects disease, hampering progress. However, use cultured research well established and, indeed, some more recently described RPE-based show promise investigating molecular mechanisms screening drug candidates. Here, we discuss innovative cell-culture emerging stem-cell-based therapies vision-robbing disease.
