摘要: Fecal analysis was used as an estimator of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) diet composition in 3 contrasting studies with apparently contradictory results. Fecal analysis underestimated shrubs in Study 1, overestimated shrubs in Study 2, and correctly estimated shrubs in Study 3. Forbs were overestimated in Study 1 and underestimated in Study 2. It was hypothesized that all estimation errors were due to changes in the ratios of identifiable to unidentifiable fragments of forages in fecal samples. Ratios were influenced by plant …
