摘要: Seven members of a new group rod-shaped hyperthermophilic neutrophilic archaebacteria were isolated from boiling neutral to alkaline solfataric waters the Azores, Iceland, and Italy. The organisms are strict anaerobes, growing optimally at 100°C. cells motile due peritrichous or bipolar polytrichous flagellation. isolates grow facultatively chemolithoautotrophically obligately heterotrophically. Molecular hydrogen complex organic substances used as electron donors. During heterotrophic growth, elemental sulfur, thiosulfate, sulfite, l(-)cystine oxidized glutathione may serve acceptors depending on individual strain. Elemental sulfur is strictly required an acceptor for autotrophic growth. G+C content DNA around 46 mol%. represent genus which we have named Pyrobaculum (the “fire stick”). Two species described: islandicum (DSM 4184), type species, organotrophum 4185).
