摘要: Abstract The concept of a threshold discharge-slope (Q-s) combination that separates braided from meandering streams is critically re-examined, partly by review previous data, and analysis new data South Island, New Zealand. It argue d discriminant functions use mean annual discharge provide poor physical basis for interpretations based on natural processes, while bankfull also deficient because it not fully independent variable. common channel (rather than valley) slope adds further misleading component dependent pattern sinuosity. Most studies have inadequately treated the role bed particle size in discrimination, failing to recognize active gravel must plot higher Q-s chart sand-bed channels — irrespective greater power requirements material movement. Within any one class there no evidence indicate clear discrimination between braiding meandering, only weak statistical association slope-discharge values. While this may be explicable terms high shear stress stream (that accompany Qs-values) promoting braiding, real prerequisite appears loads bed-calibre (producing wide shallow channels), factor controlled power. Accordingly, search seems futile exercise. An interpretation existing perspective movement made. concluded that, effect, these merely state gravel-bed are more likely finer sediment. Statistically valid, reasons difference offered balance imposed load capacity.
