Whom to ask for help in case of a mental disorder? Preferences of the lay public.

摘要: Background: Although socio-cultural factors have been recognised as an important predictor in shaping help-seeking behaviour, few attempts made this regard to specify the nature and impact of such attitudes belief systems prevalent society. Methods: We investigated lay public's toward regarding psychiatric disorders, their determinants, a cross-sectional national survey Germany (n=1564), using structured interviews with vignettes depicting person either suffering from depression or schizophrenia. Two distinct methodological approaches (rating vs ranking) were applied. Results: Public opinion considers mental health professionals helpful treating schizophrenia but not treatment depression. For depression, public clearly favours support system believes involving family physician if former resource is exhausted. Determinants recommendations problem definition, perception cause distress anticipated prognosis, well resentment against professionals. Conclusion: Our results suggest that society major on both through transmission via his/her social network person's own formed process socialization. Implications are pointed out for daily work care providers, planning discussion issues.
