Acute hepatic failure and coagulopathy associated with xylitol ingestion in eight dogs

摘要: Case Description—8 adult dogs were evaluated for treatment of lethargy and vomiting after ingestion xylitol, a sugar alcohol used as sweetener in various products. Clinical Findings—In addition to lethargy, 5 the had widespread petechial, ecchymotic, or gastrointestinal tract hemorrhages. Common clinicopathologic findings included moderately severely high serum activities liver enzymes, hyperbilirubinemia, hypoglycemia, hyperphosphatemia, prolonged clotting times, thrombocytopenia. Necropsies performed on 3 severe hepatic necrosis was found 2. In third dog, histologic examination revealed hepatocyte loss atrophy with lobular collapse. Treatment Outcome—Treatments varied among IV administration fluids; plasma transfusions; and, if indicated, dextrose.
