Flood events, fatalities and damages in India from 1978 to 2006

摘要: High temporal and spatial variability of rainfall qualifies India to be highly vulnerable floods. Recurring floods various magnitudes play havoc with the lives property people, leading unplanned development unchecked environmental degradation, thwarting retarding overall country. Therefore, purpose present study is analyze types trends in terms flood events, frequency, number people killed, injured, missing economic damage both space time on basis a nationwide database published by Meteorological Department, Pune, from 1978 2006. Analysis these long-term data has revealed that 2,443 events claimed about 44,991 average 1,551 each year. In population size, figures translate into loss 1.5 human per million population. A majority (56 %) fatalities were caused during severe events. However, frequency was just 19 % comparison heavy (65 %). context, flood-related are distributed all over country highest Uttar Pradesh (17 %), Maharashtra (13 %), Bihar Gujarat (10 % each). Most occurred summer season monsoon months August (30 %) followed July (29 %) September (20 %). The suffered cumulative 16 billion US$ between 2006 maximum 1.6 year 2000 alone. further suggests have increased period time.
