摘要: The study of latitudinal gradients can yield important insights into adaptation to temperature stress. Two strategies are available: resistance by limiting damage, or tolerance reducing the fitness consequences damage. Here we studied variation in and frost heat tested prediction a trade-off between two their costliness. We raised plants replicate maternal seed families from eight populations North American Arabidopsis lyrata collected along gradient climate chambers exposed them repeatedly either stress, while set control grew under standard conditions. When reached maximum rosette size, leaf samples were electrolyte leakage (PEL) was measured treated as an estimate resistance. Difference size stressed used tolerance. Northern more resistant, less resistant tolerant, but—unexpectedly—they also tolerant. Negative genetic correlations same different thermal stress generally not significant, indicating only weak trade-offs. However, consistently accompanied small conditions, which may explain non-adaptive pattern for Our results suggest that is constrained trade-offs them. But cost terms plant reduction be limits species distributions niches.
