Assessing community child passenger safety efforts in three Northwest Tribes

摘要: Objective: To identify strengths and weaknesses in community based child passenger safety programs by developing a scoring instrument conducting observations of restraint use three Native American communities. Setting: The communities are autonomous Tribal reservations the Pacific Northwest. Their per capita incomes rates unemployment comparable. Methods: In each community, 100 children under 5 years old were observed for car seat use. A six item assessment tool (100 points maximum) awarded such items as type (primary or secondary) enforcement laws; availability seats from distribution programs; extent educational access to data on vehicle injuries. Results: For birth 4 years, rate ranged 12%–21%. Rates infants (71%–80%) far exceeded 1–4 year (5%–14%). Community scores 0 31.5 points. There was no correlation between One reason total lack laws. Conclusions: can highlight efforts.
