摘要: During intrauterine life, the placenta undertakes some of functions performed postnatally by lungs, gut and kidneys - absorption transfer oxygen nutrients to fetus, elimination carbon dioxide other metabolic wastes. These are self-evidently vital normal development. In postnatal disease processes that impair absorptive transport or ability eliminate wastes, important causes failure attain genetic growth potential (failure thrive). The hypothesis a in utero is associated with an impairment therefore logical extension. This strengthened observations growth-restricted fetus at increased risk hypoxia [1,2], hypercapnia [1], acidaemia hypoglycaemia [1-23] hypoaminoacidaemia [1,3,4].
