摘要: Abstract We describe the gas and erogel threshold Cherenkov counters built for TASSO experiment at DESY e + − storage ring PETRA. The are arranged in two diametrically opposed groups as part of hadron arms. contain Freon 114 CO 2 respectively; 128 ellipsoidal mirrors focus light through funnels onto Philips 5″ photomultipliers coated with wavelength shifter. β = 1 charged particles detected least 99.9% efficiency. aerogel diffusing wall type. They have a sensitive area 12 m , divided into 32 cells use total 192 RCA Quantacon photomultipliers. average refractive index is around 1.025. efficiency 98%. Design considerations, prototype evaluation, construction details, performance final counter system described.
