Morphine use and adverse effects in a neonatal intensive care unit.

摘要: Prescribing patterns and appropriateness of morphine use in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were evaluated concurrent drug-use evaluation (DUE). Data collected for 99 infants who received over six-month period. Patient charts reviewed to collect the following data: patient's age, weight, dosage schedule, sedatives, ventilatory status, whether adequacy analgesia was documented, descriptions adverse drug reactions (ADRs). The physicians' orders determine NICU guidelines followed indication noted. Seven ADRs occurred six patients; three after ophthalmic cryosurgery. Indications noted 79 285 physician (27.7%). sedation or documented on 60 360 patient days (16.7%). DUE results prompted several changes: physicians asked select indications from list computerized order-entry system, an assessment scale added nursing flow sheets, endotracheal intubation became requirement before A follow-up showed nearly complete compliance with new reduction number morphine. policy changes that improved documentation efficacy reduced NICU.
