摘要: Establishment and maintenance of the reproductive division labor within social insect colonies relies on clear communication between nestmates. Fertile members convey their status to prevent others from becoming reproductively active. Recent findings in some basal termites indicate that cuticular hydrocarbon profiles may state, but there is little evidence show a direct link production—a prerequisite for an “honest” fertility signal. Here, we report putative signaling mechanism influenced by juvenile hormone (JH), primary regulator gonadal development activity insects. Topical application JH-analog (pyriproxyfen) inactive alates dampwood termite Zootermopsis nevadensis induced both females males express significantly more reproductive-specific (6,9,17-tritriacontatriene). However, did not enhance or treated beyond what usually observed maturing released inhibitory stimuli natal nest. These results suggest rise JH following disinhibition drives expression hydrocarbons, individual’s profile directly linked its state. Rather than driving gonads act indirectly through influence circulating JH.
