Politics, power and ideology in American comedy late night talk shows: A critical discourse analysis

摘要: There appears to be a new trend in transferring political issues through late night talk shows (LNTSs). The President of the United States, Barack Obama, displayed different types power relations and ideologies during interviews despite comedic nature LNTSs. Although studies have been done on the relation between LNTSs discourse, only limited number looked at theportrayal purpose this study is investigate Obama's bases power, his use deixis present two American LNTSs; Late Show with David Letterman Tonight Jay Leno. This focuses portrayal discourse (PD) using critical analyses (CDA) approachthat incorporates multimodal aspects. analyzes linguistic gestural variables transcripts collected through interviews shows. analysis data applies systemic functional linguistics approach (SFL) while ones done inassociation eclectic models non-verbal behaviors.This has revealed the which Obama used PD, influence tactics he employed relation shows’ hosts; also identified personal, temporal spatial domestic international politics.The conceptualizes frameworks and ideology PD can fit into non-traditional context such as order transfer information much wider audience.
