摘要: The magnetization and low temperature specific heat of small (20 mg) single crystals Sm2S3, Sm3S4 Sm3Se4 have been measured to test the crystal field model for Sm3+ in Th3P4 structure suggested earlier compounds EuSm2S4 SrSm2S4. In this model, Γ8 quartet is lowest but split (by ∼2.4 K) by a noncubic field. A pronounced upturn below 7 K predicted. present measurements down 1.5 confirm prediction every compound measured, same feature occurring at almost precisely temperature. addition, comparison experimental susceptibilities Sm2S3 indicates that simple addition contributions different ionic species (Sm2+ Sm3+) sufficient explain magnetic behavior these mixed valent Sm compounds.
